Walk Week Promotes Health for Children in Evanston!

Evanston IL is known as a great city which focuses on the arts, a strong community environment and a holistic lifestyle.  There are parks, walking trails and sidewalks throughout the area that promote a healthy and active environment.  Whether you currently live in Evanston or are looking for a great place to live; this city offers not just a place to live, but an enjoyable lifestyle as well!

The city is promoting this type of health conscious living to the children in Evanston in hopes that these positive habits will carry through their lives.  Recently Evanston’s Health Department implemented the idea of Walk Week during the first week of school, August 30 through September 3!  There is no need to sign up to be a part of this week and anyone is free to join in.  The idea is that children will walk in groups or with parents this first week of school in hopes of jump starting a healthy school year. 

Studies show that children don’t get enough physical exercise and, even though some children may only have to walk a few blocks, it provides a healthy start to their day and a more active lifestyle.  The Evanston Health Department is encouraging children to not only take this week long challenge, but to continue on with it throughout the school year.  As long as children are not walking in sub-zero temperatures, it is perfectly plausible for them to bundle up and continue to walk in the cooler weather. 

Walk Week offers participants free wristbands and information about the program, all of which can be picked up at Evanston libraries, recreation centers, the McGraw YMCA and the YWCA beginning August 25.  Safe walking routes are also available on the Evanston school district website as well as by calling the Health Department at 847-866-2920.
